My lack of consistent posting this week is a direct result of my new employment status. I graduated from college in May and have been looking for steady for since March. I’ve been searching ALL over the country–Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Austin, and all over Arizona. I’ve had quite a few rough patches where I felt like I’d never be able to find a job so I’m absolutely thrilled to have found a position. After an interview on Tuesday I was offered a job with a national organization and I accepted.
Now that I have a job that will utilize things I learned in college, I want to take a moment to speak about the struggle of finding a job after school. The current job market is not friendly to graduates. I applied to hundreds of jobs, was willing to relocate on my own dime, and still was unable to find a position for six months after my graduation date. It’s tough. Everyone gives you unsolicited advice and the most frustrating part of it all is that I was doing everything I could. Networking? Check. Having peers review my resume? Check. Writing kick-ass cover letters? Check. Signing up for job boards? Check. Sometimes you can do everything right and still not win. It ends up being a bit of a slap in the face when well-meaning friends, family, and strangers at your retail job tell you to just do a+b+c and you’ll immediately get a job. It just doesn’t always work that way.
BUT for those of you out there currently looking for work, I just want to say that YOU CAN DO IT! Don’t settle for a position that you know you’ll hate. Take a survey of your strengths and passions and find a position that suits you. The best advice I got in my job search was to never take a job that didn’t help me in my path. Write a 5 and 10 year plan for yourself and don’t do anything that will prevent you from reaching your desired career goals. Never stop believing in yourself. You will eventually find work. It may take a longgggg time but try your best to stay positive. Know that you aren’t the only one unable to find work and that something will come along eventually. Things will get better!
In two weeks I’ll be starting my new job as a marketing assistant with a great business. I can’t wait to get started with this next chapter of my life. I feel like all of my hard work is starting to pay off and it seems sort of unreal. Are any of you ladies looking for work? Starting new jobs? Let’s start this next chapter together :). I’m already dreaming of how I’m going to set up my work space.
I hope you all have a beautiful night.
